About the museum

Målilla mekaniska verkstad (Målilla Mechanical Workshop) was started in 1907 by Carl August Alm, who had moved to Målilla at the beginning of the 1900s. At first the business consisted mostly of repair work, and it also made some bicycles. The first engine was ready for delivery in 1908, and Alm made all the parts himself, including the patterns. Many sawmills in the area bought his engines.

After Alm bought Bruzaholms bruk in 1931, his sons Erik and Axel Alm took over the operation in Målilla, and the firm became an aktiebolag (limited company) in 1937. During the 1940s a lighter diesel engine came, the well-known DS engine, and the first compressor. Export of engines began in 1944, the same year the company changed its name to Calmoverken. In 1957 the first Swedish-made air-cooled diesel engine was launched. Operations ceased in 1991.

Today the facility is owned by Målilla-Gårdveda hembygdsförening. The workshop has been preserved with parts of its original interior, and the facility consists of eight buildings with machinery of cultural-historical interest. The office is preserved and furnished in 1940s style, and the archive contains office documents and drawings from 1907 to 1992. The local heritage society also holds courses in engine care on the premises. The first engine, from 1908, and the last, from 1958, are preserved in the Målilla Engine Museum in the heritage park.
