About the museum
Trehörnings masugn lies in Mariedamm east of Askersund and is a reminder of the old iron industry in the Lerbäck mining district (bergslag). The blast furnace was established in the 1630s and bought in 1648 by Louis de Geer. It produced pig iron, which was transported on to Godegårds bruk (ironworks). The furnace was rebuilt several times, and in 1781 it became the largest and most modern in the mining district. Operation ceased in 1889.
The furnace is a mulltimmerhytta, in which the upper part is clad with timber logs that hold together a layer of earth, while the lower part is built of stone. In the middle is the furnace shaft where the ore was smelted into iron. It is the county's only surviving furnace of this type and one of the few in the whole of Sweden.
After closure the building fell into disrepair, but interest was awakened by a model exhibited in Gothenburg in 1923. Lerbäcks hembygdsförening (Lerbäck Local Heritage Society) restored the furnace in 1932, and major restorations were also carried out in the 1960s and 1990s. It was reinaugurated in 1995 and has been a listed building since 1993.
