About the museum

The Lantbruksmuseet (Farming Museum) in Ljusfallshammar came about in two stages. The initiator was Karl Hellmark from Tjällmo, who had collected objects from the Östergötland countryside and wanted to preserve part of the cultural heritage. The museum was meant to be in Tjällmo but ended up in Ljusfallshammar in Hällestad parish, and was therefore named Tjällmo-Hällestad Skogs- och Lantbruksmuseum (Tjällmo-Hällestad Forestry and Farming Museum). Construction started in 1991, and in 1993 the first part was opened, with two exhibition halls, a sawmill building and a small meeting room.

In the second stage the museum received a large collection from Karl-Harry Nilsson in Björnö, with machines and vehicles from farming and forestry, but also objects from the home, craftspeople, the village shop and the school. For this, an exhibition hall measuring 23 by 60 metres with a gallery, in which different settings are built up, was constructed in 2003–2005. The museum was inaugurated in 2005 by the county governor (landshövding) and today has about 3,000 square metres under roof on a plot of about 40,000 square metres.

In the sawmill building there is a bonnsåg, a circular saw driven by a hot-bulb engine, which turns logs into planks and boards. The museum is run by a voluntary association, and during the season events include Museets dag (Museum Day), Bondgården förr (Farm Life in the Past), community singing (allsång) and a Christmas market.
