About the museum
Västerås historiska skeppsmuseum lies at Frösåkers brygga (quay) on the shore of Lake Mälaren, about 20 km east of Västerås. A large Viking house with objects from the Viking Age was built by the quay, and the harbour was extended with copies of Viking boats used at events.
The collection comprises around twenty replicas of medieval wooden boats. The largest are the cogs Roter Teufel and Almerekoggen, which came to Västerås in 2014 from the former Koggmuseet in Malmö harbour. There are also several Viking ships, peasant boats (allmogebåtar), snipor (snipe boats), Nordland boats and a church boat. The boats are launched and moored at the quays in summer, and new boats have been built on site to increase the collection.
The quay is run in connection with a small conference hotel in the nature reserve, and guided tours of the harbour are offered to groups.
