About the museum
Flax cultivation was of great importance in Hälsingland during the 18th and 19th centuries. Around 1700 Provost Olof Johan Broman had the idea that water power could drive the scutching and breaking of flax, and water-powered flax-processing works were then built across the whole province. In Trolldalen in Växbo there is a unique collection of buildings from that time, with a flax-breaking shed (linklapp), a flax-scutching shed (linskäkt), flax storehouses and an overnight cabin. Flax processing continued there until the mid-1950s.
When cotton and synthetic fibers took over, Swedish flax production almost died out. In Växbo it lay dormant for nearly 30 years, until ten villagers led by Rolf Åkerlund decided to resume the operation. They started a modern flax-spinning mill, and Växbo Lin opened in 1990.
Today the company weaves exclusively in 100 percent linen, in one of Sweden’s few remaining linen weaving mills. The machinery spans from 1923 to the present and shows the development of the textile industry. Visitors can walk through the factory on their own following signs, or join a guided tour, and the factory shop sells both first- and second-quality goods.
