About the museum

The museum was founded in 1967 as Vin- & Sprithistoriska Museet, a company museum run by the state alcohol monopoly AB Vin- & Spritcentralen. It was housed in the old wine warehouse Grönstedtska palatset on Dalagatan in Stockholm, and in the 1980s the exhibition was greatly expanded. Since 1992 the activity has been run by a foundation whose board is appointed by the government.

The collection comprises about 13,000 objects, largely bottles, labels, barrels and tools from wine and spirits production from the late 19th century onwards, as well as photographs and literature. When Vin & Sprit was sold to Pernod Ricard in 2008, the art collection Absolut Art Collection, with about 850 works, was handed over to the museum.

The handover was the start of an extensive renewal, and in 2012 the museum opened in new premises in Galärskjulen on Djurgården under the name Spritmuseum. The building has a permanent main exhibition on Swedish drinks culture, areas for temporary exhibitions and an art hall for the museum’s own art collection. A restaurant and bar are in the same building.
