About the museum
The Capricorn exhibition is located on the first floor of the Center da Capricorns in Wergenstein on the Schams mountain, right behind the reception of the Hotel Restaurant Capricorns. The office of the Beverin Nature Park is also based in the same building. The building was founded in 1933 by the Metal and Watchmakers’ Union as a holiday home. To preserve the house, the Fundaziun Capricorn foundation was established in 2005 to promote the development of the Schams region; the holiday home became the Center da Capricorns.
The permanent exhibition is devoted to the Alpine ibex, the heraldic animal of Graubünden. It begins with an interactive relief of the Beverin Nature Park that can be explored with multimedia. Wall drawings in the style of cave paintings and a replica rock face tell how the ibex was wiped out, reintroduced and spread again. Tablets offer more in-depth information, and a species quiz compares the Alpine ibex with its relatives in Eurasia and Africa. At the end, three life-size ibex specimens stand in the room.
A large ibex colony has once again lived in the Beverin Nature Park area for decades. From Wergenstein, the “Capricorn Pirsch” puzzle trail leads families into the surroundings.
