Om museet

The Herzogliches Georgianum traces its origins to a foundation established by Duke George the Rich in 1494: a college for needy students at the Bavarian state university in Ingolstadt. It moved with the university to Landshut in 1800 and to Munich in 1826, where the present building on Ludwigstraße was built from 1835 to 1840, forming an ensemble with the buildings of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität. Candidates for the priesthood and priests pursuing studies still live here today.

The seminary owes its art collection above all to Andreas Schmid, who headed it for decades from 1866. He gathered religious artworks – many from his home region of the Allgäu – so that future pastors could learn about liturgy, imagery and the veneration of saints from original works and later handle the art treasures of their parishes responsibly. Wall paintings, interior decoration and a collection of plaster casts were lost in World War II, while the movable works that had been moved to safety largely survived.

For the foundation's anniversary in 1986, director Reiner Kaczynski had the collection newly presented in specially furnished rooms on the raised ground floor facing Ludwigstraße, making it accessible to the public and to researchers. Since 1988 a friends' association has supported the preservation of the art collection and the historic library. Of some 600 objects, about half are on display.
