About the museum
The house in Ordino dates from the 17th century, although most of the present structure is from the mid-19th century. It was the residence of the Areny-Plandolit family, the only family in the Principality to hold a noble title. Their influence came from family alliances, livestock farming, the 18th-century iron industry, mining, forges and international relations.
Among the best-known members is Guillem d’Areny-Plandolit, Baron of Senaller and Gramenet, Síndic General de les Valls and promoter of the Nova Reforma (New Reform) of 1866. The house was lived in until the 1950s; in 1972 the General Council bought it and restored it, and in 1986 it opened its doors as a museum.
The visit shows the rooms of the house with many objects that belonged to the family, reflecting a way of life that was unusual in the Andorran valleys: salons, pastimes such as hunting and fencing, and the social life of Barcelona. The tour is completed by the garden, one of the first in Andorra designed purely for leisure, and by “El somni de Don Guillem” (Don Guillem’s Dream), a show that combines holograms and physical objects in the upper part of the house.
