About the museum
The Museu Nacional de l’Automòbil in Encamp opened in 1988 thanks to the collaboration between the Government of Andorra and several collectors who wanted to make their vehicles available to the public. The collection is largely made up of private collections and is regarded as one of the most important in Europe for cars.
The collection brings together some eighty vehicles, from a steam vehicle of 1885 to sports cars of the 1980s, spread over several floors of the building. The route shows how design and engineering evolved to meet the needs of each era and how speed and power limits were gradually surpassed.
The museum also holds around a hundred bicycles, which show how a clumsy, uncomfortable and dangerous contraption became a streamlined, reliable and practical machine; in this field it is a world reference. Among the exhibits is the Citroën CX Prestige, the first official car of the Principality, a gift from the French Co-Prince Valéry Giscard d’Estaing in 1980.
