Nagycenki Széchenyi Múzeumvasút

A narrow-gauge museum railway between Nagycenk and Fertőboz, with steam and diesel traction, a locomotive open-air museum and an interactive railway nature trail.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 1,100

About the museum

The idea was raised in autumn 1969 by staff of the GYSEV: at a time when narrow-gauge transport in Hungary was being rapidly wound up, they wanted to save the most characteristic equipment of the light railway and show it to the general public in operation. The idea came at the right time, because the restoration of the Széchenyi-kastély (Széchenyi Mansion) in Nagycenk had just begun; a memorial museum was also planned, and a passenger link was needed between the main line and the mansion.

The 760 mm gauge line, 3,600 metres long, was built in 1972 between Nagycenk and Fertőboz. Part of its track runs along the embankment and bridge of the former line of the Fertőboz–Nagycenk sugar factory, over the Ikva. At the start, two steam locomotives were in service: No. 394 023, built in 1923 for the sugar beet railway of the Mezőhegyes sugar factory, and some of the coaches came from the carriages of the disbanded Kisújszállás light railway.

Today the museum railway serves passengers with two locomotives and eight coaches from spring to autumn; the rolling stock also includes the Dmot railcar built by Ganz. In Nagycenk a locomotive open-air museum, an interactive railway nature trail, a playground and a fitness park await visitors, beside the lime-tree avenue and the Széchenyi-kastély.
