About the museum
The open-air museum at the entrance to the Arntal in Innervillgraten shows the time before electricity reached the valley and water was the only source of power. The ensemble was built up and restored by the Villgrater Heimatpflegeverein together with the municipality, the Federal Monuments Office and the Province of Tyrol; 2022 is given as the opening year.
The centrepiece is the Wegelate sawmill of 1883, a Venetian frame sawmill and the last of once eight water-powered sawmills in Innervillgraten. It was restored in the 1990s, awarded the Europa Nostra Prize for this, and renovated again in 2021/22.
In addition there are the roughly 200-year-old Lodenstampf (fulling mill), in which sheep's wool is pounded and fulled, the Lüfter mill, moved here in 2017, the Einhof (single-structure farmhouse) “Neuhauser”, built around 1700 to 1740, with a collection of tools, and the typical alpine hut “Riepenkammer”. During the demonstrations the facilities are in operation, and guides explain the technology and history.
