About the museum
The museum was founded in 1995 by researcher Michael Wachtler in Villa Wachtler, a listed building in the centre of San Candido. It is located in the pedestrian zone and takes visitors on a journey from prehistory to the present day, through fossil landscapes, minerals and Dolomite legends.
The collection grew out of the founder's field research and focuses on the formation of the mountains and of life in the Dolomites, placing the subject in the context of the UNESCO World Heritage site. The museum also describes itself as a research institution.
Among the best-known pieces is Megachirella wachtleri, considered an ancestor of today's snakes and lizards. The route also presents dinosaur reconstructions, cave bear remains, the largest gold find in the Alps, a section on talismans and one on wild herbs. Outside, children can search for gemstones and fossils.
