About the museum
The Rudolf Stolz Museum was founded in 1969 as a public museum, on the initiative of Margarethe Stolz Hoke, the painter’s daughter, the artist Giselbert Hoke, the architect Erich Pattis and citizens interested in art; it was inaugurated on 13 April 1969. For its first twenty-five years it was directed by his daughter Hanni Stolz. In 2005 the museum was reorganised and extended.
The museum is in the centre of Sesto and holds sketches and studies for the many frescoes of Rudolf Stolz (Bolzano 1874 – Sesto 1960), regarded as one of the most important fresco painters of Tyrol in the twentieth century, together with studies, watercolours and graphic works. Alongside his works, paintings by his brother Albert Stolz are on display, including those he produced as a war painter on Lake Garda, donated by the Reut-Nicolussi sisters.
In 2015, thanks to the support of a private entrepreneur, the Comune and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio (savings bank foundation), the painting “Giornata di pioggia a Sesto” by the Austrian Impressionist Marie Egner was acquired. Every year the museum presents a themed summer exhibition, usually featuring artists from the Tyrolean area.
