About the museum

The castle in Zogelsdorf, a few kilometres south of Eggenburg, has a core dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. From 1522 it belonged to various noble families, and in 1628 it passed to the lordship of Harmannsdorf. In the 19th century the building temporarily served as an inn; in 1839 the Suttner family acquired it, and in 1848, while in their possession, it even housed the imperial court. Today it belongs to the Perko-Greiffenbühl family.

In 2009 an orders museum opened in the castle, run by a voluntary association. It shows historical decorations, awards, medals and order insignia, spanning the period from the Crusades through the history of the Knights Hospitaller, the Templars and the Teutonic Order to the present day.

The collection is complemented by a local history museum and a room on the history of hunting. The two-storey castle, with its barrel vaults, arcaded courtyards and the balcony on the south side, can be visited on a guided tour after registration.
