About the museum
Salona was the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and one of the largest urban centres on the eastern coast of the Adriatic. The remains of the city lie beside the River Jadro in Solin, a few kilometres from Split. The city was destroyed in 614 by Avars and Slavs, and its inhabitants took refuge behind the walls of Diocletian’s Palace (Dioklecijanova palača), from which Split later developed.
Today the archaeological site includes the city walls with the Porta Caesarea gate, the forum, the theatre, the large city baths, the amphitheatre, and the early Christian churches with a baptistery at Manastirine. The visit begins at Tusculum, where a small collection of the Archaeološki muzej u Splitu (Archaeological Museum in Split) is located.
