About the museum
The Klis Fortress rises on a steep rock in a gorge between the Kozjak and Mosor mountains, with a view of the sea on one side and of the Zagora hinterland on the other. Because of its position, overlooking the Klis plain and the area of Salona and Split, Klis was often called the key to Dalmatia and the heart of the medieval Kingdom of Croatia. The Trpimirova povelja (Charter of Trpimir) of 852 mentions Klis as one of the duke’s princely estates.
The fortress consists of three walled sections with separate entrances. Most of the surviving buildings date from the Venetian and Austrian periods: the main entrance was built by the Austrians in the 1820s, and in the third defensive ring the church of St Vitus has survived. The Ottomans built it as a mosque after their conquest in 1537, and the Venetians converted it back into a church after the liberation in 1648. Next to it stand the Bembo bastion, the fortress’s largest artillery position, and the Providurov stan (provveditore’s residence) from the mid-17th century.
The entrance ticket also includes a visit to the Interpretation Centre on Trg Mejdan, the Etno agro park Stella Croatica and the Muzej masline (Olive Museum).
