About the museum
The Arheološki muzej (Archaeological Museum) is part of the Dubrovnik Museums. Its holdings comprise diverse material from prehistory to the late Middle Ages, arranged among other things into prehistoric, ancient, Cypriot and Egyptian, numismatic and early medieval collections, and collections of late medieval and early modern material. The museum still has no permanent display, so part of the material is shown in Revelin Fortress within thematic exhibitions.
The exhibition “Ranosrednjovjekovna skulptura u Dubrovniku i okolici” (“Early Medieval Sculpture in Dubrovnik and Its Surroundings”) presents parts of architectural sculpture and stone furniture from the 9th to the 12th century from various sites in the town and its nearer surroundings, mostly from churches in the Grad (old town), but also from small churches in the area. It was first displayed in 2003 in the Knežev dvor (Rector’s Palace), and in 2020 it was supplemented with new finds.
The exhibition “Cvijet u kamenu” (“Flower in Stone”) deals with fragments of interlace ornamentation with floral motifs from the early medieval collection, from botanical and symbolic points of view. In Revelin there is also an exhibition on the archaeological research, spatial development and foundry of the fortress itself.
