About the museum
The Arheološki muzej u Zagrebu (Archaeological Museum in Zagreb) is the direct successor of the Narodni muzej (National Museum), the oldest museum institution in the capital, which operated publicly and in an organised way from 1846. From 1866 it functioned under the protection of the Croatian Parliament (Sabor), with a Natural History and an Archaeological Department, and from 1940, after the formal end of the Narodni muzej, the Archaeological Museum operated independently.
From 1945 it has been housed in the Vranyczany-Dobrinović Palace on Zrinjevac. The collection comprises more than 450,000 artefacts; most of them are monuments of domestic origin from the Croatian historical area, acquired by purchase, donations and, from the mid-20th century, mainly through field research.
The museum differs from similar Croatian institutions in its rich collections of foreign origin: the Egyptian collection, most of the Numismatic collection, and Greek and Roman monumental material, in particular painted Greek vases from southern Italy and Greece and stone monuments of Italic origin. The wrappings of the Zagreb Mummy, known as the Zagrebačka lanena knjiga (Liber linteus Zagrabiensis), attract particular attention. The museum was damaged in the earthquake of 22 March 2020.
