About the museum

The gallery bears the name of Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, who spent years in Đakovo building up a collection of artworks, from Italian masters of the 15th century to the Croatian painters of his own time. In 1868 he decided to hand the collection over to the Croatian people and entrusted it to the Academy. For its display he had a neo-Renaissance palace built in Zagreb to designs by the Viennese architect Franz Schmidt. The gallery and palace opened on 9 November 1884 with 256 works of art.

Over the centuries the collection was expanded through purchases and donations, among them from Ivan Ružić, the Marquis Étienne de Piennes, Ante Topić Mimara and Zlatko Baloković. Today it is a collection of European painting from the 15th to the 19th century, particularly known for its small masters of the Italian Renaissance. The collection includes works by Beato Angelico, Vittore Carpaccio, Andrija Medulić, Palma Mlađi, Federico Benković, El Greco, Joachim Patinir and Jacob van Ruisdael, and the portrait Madame Récamier by Antoine-Jean Gros.

Because of the consequences of the earthquake, the gallery is closed to visitors until further notice. It publishes the catalogue of the collection, exhibitions and publications on its website, and a library operates alongside the gallery.
