About the museum
The Crkva sv. Donata (St Donatus Church) is the best-known pre-Romanesque building in Zadar. Construction began in the second half of the 8th century and is thought to have been completed in the 9th century; it is attributed to the Zadar bishop and diplomat Donatus. Originally it was dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and it received the name of St Donatus in the 15th century.
It was built on the Roman Forum from the building material of older buildings; the foundations also contain a fragment of an altar with a Latin inscription. In later periods it served as a storehouse, and after the incorporation into Yugoslavia it was briefly an archaeological museum.
The church is managed by the Arheološki muzej Zadar (Archaeological Museum Zadar) as one of its units. Because of its excellent acoustics, concerts are held in it, especially at the festival Glazbene večeri u sv. Donatu (Music Evenings in St Donatus). Visits are with a ticket, and the joint ticket is also valid for the Arheološki muzej Zadar.
