About the museum
The Narodni muzej Zadar has been part of the public museum service since 1832, when the Austrian governor of Dalmatia, Vetter von Lilienberg, called on district administrators and bishops to collect heritage for a provincial museum based in Zadar. From these beginnings the Arheološki muzej kod sv. Donata (Archaeological Museum at St Donatus) emerged in 1880, and in 1905 the Gradski prirodoslovni muzej (City Natural History Museum) was founded, whose collections form the basis of today's Natural History Department.
In September 1945 the Narodni muzej (National Museum) was founded with a natural history and an ethnographic department; in 1952 the departments became independent museums. In 1962 the city committee re-established the Narodni muzej as a complex museum, bringing together the natural history and ethnological departments, the Galerija umjetnina (Gallery of Art, founded 1948) and the new Muzej grada Zadra. During the Homeland War in 1991 the museum's administrative building was damaged.
Today the museum holds around 100,000 objects, and its founder is the Zadarska županija (Zadar County). It exhibits in the Kneževa palača (Rector's Palace), the Providurova palača (Provveditore's Palace) and the Gradska loža (Town Loggia). In the Kneževa palača, on the first floor, is the display “Šest salonskih priča” (Six Salon Stories), and the Natural History Department has an exhibition on the vertebrates of the Adriatic. The museum also manages branch collections on the island of Iž.
