About the museum

The Muzej ninskih starina is a department of the Archaeological Museum in Zadar in Nin. Archaeological and historical material from Nin has been collected since the late 19th century in the first antiquarian collection, housed in the Church of the Holy Cross. In 1960 the museum received a building on Trg Kraljevac, and that year it opened the first permanent display of the Područna zbirka Nin (Nin Regional Collection). The building was extended in 1970 and 1971, and the display was renewed with new showcases and finds.

After the Croatian War of Independence (Homeland War) the display was reorganised in 1999 according to contemporary museum standards. Since 2004 the collection has operated as the Muzej ninskih starina within the Archaeological Museum in Zadar.

The permanent display in six connected halls on the ground floor traces the history of Nin from prehistory to the destruction of the town in 1646: prehistory, Roman antiquity and early Christianity, and the early, developed and late Middle Ages through to the early modern period. In a separate pavilion are reconstructed ships of the 11th century, raised from the sea near the entrance to the Nin harbour, along with a partial reconstruction of a Liburnian “serilija” from the ancient harbour at Zaton. Alongside the permanent display there is a lapidarium of stone monuments, and temporary exhibitions are held on the first floor.
