About the museum
The museum is housed in the renovated convent building within the Benedictine convent of St Mary in Zadar, founded in the 11th century and destroyed in the Second World War. The Benedictine nuns preserved the treasure from war damage on this site. The institution was legally established in 1967 and opened to visitors in 1976.
Most of the objects on display were made in Zadar to order for church dignitaries, noble and bourgeois families, and urban and rural brotherhoods. The artistic display was designed by the painter and architect Edo Kovačević and has been preserved in its original form; the showcases were designed by the architect Bernardo Bernardi.
The objects are arranged chronologically in eight halls on the ground floor and on the first and second floors. On the ground floor the interior of the 11th-century church of St Nediljica has been restored; the first floor holds Romanesque and Gothic art, and the second floor works from the late Gothic to the Baroque. The display comprises 207 objects on about 1,200 m², and the collection is registered as a cultural property.
