About the museum

The Etnografska zbirka otoka Krka u Dobrinju is a relocated collection of the Pomorski i povijesni muzej Hrvatskog primorja Rijeka. The idea for it dates from the 1960s, when cultural workers of the Kvarner, faced with the consequences of tourism’s growth on the island, recognised the need to protect and store endangered ethnographic material. Material of purely ethnographic significance was collected intensively, and the island’s rural settlements were also visited.

The exhibition opened in 1974 in the birth house of the journalist and publicist Ivo Sučić, which his wife donated to the local community in 1971 in line with his testamentary wish. The holdings of almost one thousand three hundred objects were displayed in several sections: textiles, traditional musical instruments, jewellery, household equipment, and material on livestock farming, fishing and agriculture.

Because of poor conditions in the exhibition space and the need for repairs, all the material was transferred in 2017 to the museum’s storage in Rijeka until the new permanent exhibition in Dobrinj is realised. The collection is closed until further notice because of preparatory work on the new display and conservation-restoration measures.
