About the museum

The Interpretacijski centar Bribir is part of the route “Putevima Frankopana”. Its theme is the Vinodol Code (Vinodolski zakonik), in which Bribir is mentioned for the first time as one of the Frankopan fortified towns in Vinodol. The code was enacted on 6 January 1288 and is the oldest law not only in Croatia but in the Slavic south; it is written in Glagolitic.

Residents of the nine Vinodol municipalities (Novi, Ledenice, Bribir, Grižane, Drivenik, Hreljin, Bakar, Trsat and Grobnik) elected representatives who wrote down national legal customs and considered them in the new circumstances of feudalism. Although Vinodol came under the rule of the Krk counts through a charter of King Andrew II in 1225, free peasants did not want to become serfs, so the code is also an art of compromise.

The penalties in the code are mostly monetary; neither ordeals nor torture are mentioned, and special attention is paid to the protection of women and to limiting the arbitrariness of public officials.
