About the museum
The Frankopans built the castle on Krk from the 12th to the 15th century. Apart from defence, it also served as a shelter for the population during attacks. The construction is layered and based on the remains of earlier Roman and Late Antique phases of the town. The square tower, the oldest part of the castle, was originally the cathedral’s bell tower and later a court room. A Latin inscription on the lunette above the entrance to the tower, from the second half of the 12th century, records that the whole community built the tower in the time of Bishop Ivan and the Krk counts Bartol I and Vid I.
The castle took its present form when the eastern towers were erected, and the existing square tower was incorporated into the ramparts with a guard walkway and a late Gothic crown. The south-western so-called Austrian tower dates from the 14th century, and the round Venetian tower probably from the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16th century. On the outside, towards Kamplin, there is a stone slab with the symbol of St Mark. After restoration it is possible to walk along part of the ramparts.
The castle houses the Interpretation Centre Krk, part of the route “Putevima Frankopana” (Following the Frankopans). It presents the Frankopan architecture of the castle as a symbol of social control and power on the island, replicas of medieval weapons, and a small open-air archaeological display, including Liburnian funerary cippi from the 1st and 2nd centuries and inscriptions from antiquity.
