About the museum
The Tikveš castle complex in the central part of Baranja, today within the Park prirode Kopački rit, dates from the 19th century and was built by members of the Habsburg Teschen line (tešenska loza obitelji Habsburg). The history of the area has been linked to the management of natural resources since 1697, when Emperor Leopold I granted the estate to Prince Eugen Savojski. The castle was a well-known residential hunting centre, but an exclusive one, reserved for rulers and dignitaries.
After the Second World War the complex was nationalised and served as a hunting centre; President Josip Broz often stayed here for hunts with foreign guests. During the occupation of Baranja it was completely plundered, and since 1991 it has been owned by the Republic of Croatia. Since 2000 the complex has been managed by the Javna ustanova Park prirode Kopački rit (Public Institution Kopački rit Nature Park).
As part of a project co-financed by European Union funds, the Old Castle and the New Castle, together with the annex of the New Castle, were renovated and repurposed as a Prezentacijsko-edukacijski centar (Presentation and Education Centre), whose display is designed as a starting point for learning about the nature of Kopački rit.
