About the museum
The Narodni muzej i galerija (National Museum and Gallery) in Novi Vinodolski is a general local heritage museum with a tradition of more than seven decades. It was originally housed in the house of the Mrzljak family in the so-called Biškupija, the former seat of the Modruški kaptol (Chapter of Modruš), opposite the parish church of St Philip and St James. Because more exhibition space was needed, in 1973 it moved to the second floor of the Frankopanski kaštel and into the Turnac Tower (kula Turnac). From 1975 the word galerija (gallery) was added to its name, on the initiative of the Vinodolski skup izvornih slikara i kipara Jadrana (Vinodol Gathering of Original Painters and Sculptors of the Adriatic), who donated their works to the museum.
The collection consists of gifts from individuals at home and abroad, purchases and research results: the underwater sites near Povile and Lopar (1963), the Early Bronze Age site Vlaška peć between Novi and Senj (1968 and 1986), and finds from Stinica near Jablanac, where the town of Murula once stood. Objects are divided into archaeological and hydroarchaeological, numismatic, ethnographic, art, cultural-historical and historical collections, the NOB (People's Liberation Struggle) collection, and the collection of the Mažuranić family. The permanent display also included a model of the ancient fort at Lopar.
On the ground floor of the Turnac Tower, the Gradska galerija Turnac (Turnac Town Gallery) has operated since 1994 with a summer programme of exhibitions. Due to the rearrangement of the permanent display, the display space has been closed since 12 October 2026 until the works are completed; the museum office continues to work on weekdays.
