About the museum
The museum’s roots go back to 1934, when the Društvo prijatelja starina grada Križevaca (Society of Friends of Antiquities of the City of Križevci) was founded to collect objects for a future museum. In 1952, on the 700th anniversary of Križevci as a free royal town, the museum began as a local heritage collection assembled by Dragutin Zajec, and later became a museum.
In 1961 it moved into the 18th-century building known as the Pauline guesthouse, built next to the Pauline monastery to receive guests. The building took its present form in the late 18th century, as attested by the year 1796 carved on the south portal. It was adapted for exhibitions after 1961, and the façade and ground floor were renovated in 2002. The permanent display is spread across seven rooms: the archaeological collection and the armoury are on the ground floor, and on the first floor are the cultural-historical, ethnographic, church and guild collection, as well as a room on the social and cultural life of Križevci at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century.
The museum’s art gallery is in a second historic building on Trg Antuna Nemčića, and the museum also manages the Etno-park. The first trained employee, the art historian Vladimir Srimšek, founded the Likovna galerija (Art Gallery) and its collection in 1968.
