About the museum
On 29 September 1991 an explosion occurred at the site of a reserve ammunition depot of the 265th Motorised Brigade of the JNA. It left a crater 12 metres deep and destroyed the forest within a radius of 60 metres. The people of Bjelovar call the place the “Hiroshima of Bjelovar”. The memorial site was renovated and reopened in 2020.
Muzej Operativne zone i Zbornog područja Bjelovar is run by the Društvo za očuvanje hrvatske vojne tradicije. The display has been digitised, and every year a ceremonial programme is held on the anniversary of the event in honour of the fallen defenders.

- Muzejski postav Operativne zone i Zbornog područja Bjelovar – Inside are interactive scenic displays of important local and national events from the Homeland War, a memorial room dedicated to the fallen defenders from Barutana and the Bjelovar region, and a corridor with a 25-metre timeline. In the attic is a gallery with works by painters from the wider Bjelovar area, mostly on Homeland War themes.
- Barutana na otvorenom – A nature trail with 14 information boards traces developments from the breakup of Yugoslavia and the Homeland War to the most recent military and police operations. Outdoors, a T-55 tank and a BVP M-80 infantry fighting vehicle are on display.
