Temporarily closedFree admission
Temporarily closed. The main building is undergoing structural renovation after an earthquake; the museum is temporarily located at Ulica Katarine Krizmanić 1 (premises in the Komunalni centar), where no exhibitions are currently held.

About the museum

The beginnings of the museum go back to 1977, when the Zavičajna zbirka (Local Heritage Collection) was established. The Zavičajni muzej was founded in 1988, and today it operates under the name Muzej Sveti Ivan Zelina.

The museum holds an archaeological collection with objects from prehistory to the late Middle Ages, a collection of more than 2,000 charters and armorial letters from the 14th to the 20th century, an ethnographic and a numismatic collection, and a collection of old photographs. The museum is also linked to the project to restore Zelingrad, the medieval town above Sveti Ivan Zelina, for which the museum organises group guided tours.

Since 14 March 2022 the museum has been temporarily located at Ulica Katarine Krizmanić 1, in the former restaurant premises of the Komunalni centar (Municipal Centre), because the main building at Trg Ante Starčevića 13 is undergoing urgent structural renovation after an earthquake. At the temporary location the museum currently holds no exhibitions, but it offers workshops, publications and smaller presentations.
