About the museum

The Muzej grada Ludbrega was founded on 2 June 2021 as a museum within the Centar za kulturu i informiranje “Dragutin Novak”. It is a general, regional museum of the local heritage and complex type, which collects, researches and presents the material and intangible heritage of the Ludbreg area. Its collections are organised into an archaeological and an ethnographic department, as well as historical and art collections.

The collections are housed in three buildings in the town. The Arheološki park “Iovia” opened in 2021 on the site where a Roman villa and bath complex were discovered; visitors view finds from the permanent display, an antique garden and reconstructions with the help of VR headsets. Batthyány Castle, built on the site of a medieval castrum at a crossing of old roads, keeps the chapel of the Holy Cross and a collection of sacred art. Over the course of history the families Paližna, Bakonjić, Čuz, Thuróczy, Erdődy and Batthyány succeeded one another in the castle.

The third location is Bakina hiža and the Dedekov dvor, where the ethnographic display “Tak se negda živelo” (“That’s How Life Used to Be”) opened in April 2025. The objects have been collected since 2006 by members of the association “Žene iz Centra svijeta” (Women from the Centre of the World), who have been working with the museum since 2021.
