About the museum
The Gradski muzej Makarska was founded in 1995 and is located on the first floor of the Baroque Tonoli Palace, built in the second half of the 18th century on the western side of the town’s waterfront and harbour. It succeeds earlier museum bodies: the Muzej NOB-a biokovskog područja (Museum of the People’s Liberation Struggle of the Biokovo Area, 1962), the Muzej revolucije and the Zavičajni muzej Makarskog primorja (local history museum).
The museum holds ten collections: archaeological, ethnographic, numismatic, cultural-historical, a collection of photographs, postcards, posters and maps, the Gojak donation, and a collection of contemporary artists. The archaeological collection includes finds from the town, the wider coast and the area behind the Biokovo mountains, among them rare finds from the Sv. Petar site, for example fragments of a painted Greek vessel in the geometric style from the second half of the 8th century BC. Components of the museum are the Galerija Antun Gojak and the Interpretacijski centar Veliki kaštel (interpretation centre) in Kotišina.
