About the museum
The Malakološki muzej (Malacological Museum) opened to the public on 30 April 1963 in the old part of the Franciscan Monastery in Makarska, which is a protected cultural monument. The monastery was founded in 1518. The museum was established by Dr Fra Jure Radić with an attractive display of bivalves from the Adriatic and from all over the world.
In the exhibition, most of the holdings are shells of sea snails and bivalves, along with corals and several other marine species. Besides shells of the Adriatic, shells from Hawaii, Oceania, California, China, Japan, the Caribbean, Australia, Madagascar, the Philippines, the Red Sea, Antarctica and the Coral Reef are displayed.
Alongside the recent shells there is a fossil collection with ammonites, rudists, snails, bivalves, sea urchins, corals and algae, mainly from central Dalmatia. Fra Jure Radić also preserved a herbarium of Biokovo plants, and around the museum a collection of living native Biokovo plants has been laid out.
