About the museum
The Gradski muzej Omiš was founded in 1986. It is housed in a building directly next to the eastern town gate, at the entrance to the old town core. The display presents a selection from the region’s rich archaeological and cultural-historical heritage.
The archaeological material bears witness to uninterrupted settlement since the Late Neolithic. From antiquity, the Oneum in the hamlet of Baučići stands out, where a marble head of the emperor Tiberius, imperial inscriptions, numismatic finds and fragments of inscriptions from monumental buildings were found. Examples of church furnishings from the early Christian complex of St Cyprian in Gata, dating from the time of Justinian, are of special value. The museum also keeps art collections, among them self-portraits and portraits from the collection of Klement Lukin, a donation by Milovan Stanić, works in wood by Jure Stanić Darko, and the collection of Gracijela and Ante Munitić. It organises workshops, lectures and exhibitions of local artists.
