About the museum
Veliki kaštel was built right against the cliffs of Biokovo as a multi-storey fortress from the time of the Cretan War (1645–1669), by adapting a cave and a vaulted shelter. Local forces built it under the protection of Venice as a military stronghold and a shelter for the population in the conflict with the Ottomans.
After the renovation and reconstruction of the interior in 2019, the exhibition Interpretacijski centar, managed by the Gradski muzej Makarska, was set up in the fortress. The centre presents the cultural and natural heritage of Kotišina through three themes: archaeological, ethnological and natural heritage. On display are archaeological finds from the site of the church of St Martin and Veliki kaštel, stories about the way of life of the population, and a large part of the display on plant diversity, especially the Kotišina botanical garden and the legacy of its founder, Friar Jure Radić.
