About the museum
The Gradski muzej Novalja is a unit of the Centar za kulturu Grada Novalje (Culture Centre of the Town of Novalja). It holds several collections, among which the ethnographic and archaeological ones are the most prominent and make up the largest part of the permanent display. The museum building stands above the entrance to a Roman aqueduct, which is partly open to visitors.
The ancient aqueduct in Novalja is an underground channel, preserved over a length of about 1,050 metres and carved into the living rock. It was probably built in the 1st century, and its use is confirmed from the early 3rd century. It is one of the most impressive and best-preserved ancient structures in Novalja. In the early 20th century the Austro-Hungarian authorities restored it and tried to use it again, and in 1912 the structure was ceremonially put into operation.
The archaeological collection displays mainly pottery from Roman-period graves at Caska, where systematic excavations since 2005 have uncovered the remains of a large estate of the senatorial family Calpurnii Pisones and at least four ships from the early Empire; a model of one of the ships is on the ground floor of the museum. A separate archaeological collection is also located in Stomorica.
