About the museum

The first attempts to found a museum in Mali Lošinj date back to 1955, when the Općinski muzej (Municipal Museum) was established; for lack of space it operated only until 1960. The Piperata collection of old masters was exhibited in 1967 and bought in 1972. From 1978 museum activity was carried out by the then Narodno sveučilište (People’s University), to which the Arheološka zbirka Osor (Osor Archaeological Collection) and the Creski muzej (Cres Museum) were attached. The City of Mali Lošinj founded the independent institution, today’s Lošinjski muzej (Lošinj Museum), in 2007.

The decisive event was the donation of Andro Vid Mihičić and Katarina Mihičić in 1988, after which the permanent display in the Fritzi Palace was created. The collection of Croatian masters of Andro Vid Mihičić was first exhibited in 1993, and the Piperata collection of old masters was installed in 1998. The Fritzi Palace is the seat of the museum; the museum also includes the museum space Kula (Tower) in Veli Lošinj, the Osor Archaeological Collection and the Muzej Apoksiomena (Apoxyomenos Museum).

In the Fritzi Palace are the two most important collections of the Umjetničke zbirke Maloga Lošinja (Art Collections of Mali Lošinj): the Piperata collection of old masters in the large hall on the first floor, and the collection of Croatian masters of Andro Vid Mihičić on the third floor. In the gallery of the large hall there is also a collection of photographic equipment and images of Lošinj from the first half of the 20th century, assembled by Dante Lussin. The display also covers the Dama iz Čikata (Lady of Čikat), Lošinj pharmacies, folk costumes and Mali Lošinj in the 19th century.
