About the museum
The museum space Kula is housed in a defensive tower in Veli Lošinj, which the Republic of Venice had built to protect the island and the surrounding sea; according to the inscription it was completed in 1455. It is a typical Renaissance tower with thick walls, relatively low, with the upper part of the walls leaning outwards. The tower later lost its defensive role and fell into decline; it was restored in 1774. The latest restoration began in 1997 with funds from the City of Mali Lošinj and the Italian Province of Venice, and the tower reopened to the public in 2000.
The museum space opened in 2001 and is a department of the Lošinj Museum. The permanent exhibition combines a thematic and chronological presentation of the history of Veli Lošinj and its surroundings, and the objects are described in Croatian and English. On the ground floor are the history of the tower and finds from its foundations, and a replica of the Apoxyomenos in original size, laid as it lay on the seabed near Veli Lošinj where it was found. The first floor presents the past of the town from prehistory to the 20th century, with an installation of amphorae and weapons from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The second floor is devoted to the seafaring of Veli Lošinj, with portraits of captains, paintings of sailing ships and a model of the sailing ship Esempio from 1877, the last vessel built at the Rovenska shipyard. On the third floor are models of sailing ships that follow five centuries of shipbuilding and seafaring in Lošinj. At the top is the tower’s upper platform, with a view of the town and the bay.
