About the museum

The Benedictine monastery of St Margaret in Pag (Samostan sv. Margarite) celebrated the 700th anniversary of its founding in 2018. The Benedictine nuns were the first teachers in the town and founded the first school for girls, where for centuries they taught reading, writing, Christian education and lace-making free of charge. The monastery is also known for Pag lace and for the confectionery it has produced since the 16th century.

The Muzej Samostana sv. Margarite was entered in the Upisnik javnih i privatnih muzeja (Register of Public and Private Museums) on 3 April 2025 as a museum of a religious community, and began work in mid-2025. The permanent exhibition of sacred art is arranged on the second floor of the museum building in Koludraška Street, which is part of the monastery complex. On about 248 m², 42 objects are displayed; the display was designed by the architect Željko Kovačić.

The exhibition includes reliquaries, paintings and sculptures, some of which exceed local significance. The first floor of the building is being prepared for a new exhibition, “Nota & Nit”.
