About the museum
The Gradski muzej Virovitica (Virovitica Town Museum) was founded in 1953 as a local history museum of a complex type for the town and its surroundings. From the beginning it has been housed in the Pejačević Castle, but only through the integrated project “5 do 12 za Dvorac” (“Five to Twelve for the Castle”), carried out from 2016 to 2019, was the whole castle brought into use as a museum.
After years of preparation, on 5 December 2019 the museum opened two new permanent displays, “Drveno doba” and “Povijest grada i dvorca”, together with the completely renovated castle. The displays are based on a museum concept confirmed by the Croatian Museum Council at the Ministry of Culture and Media.
“Drveno doba” is a thematic display that presents Virovitica, a town surrounded by forests, as the starting point of the story of wood. Three sections, “Za istim stolom” (“At the Same Table”), “Ruke majstora” (“Hands of the Master”) and “Da kucnem o drvo…, zlo ne čulo” (“I Knock on Wood… Evil Does Not Hear”), show wood through family, work and communication, and the display uses multimedia, sound and tactile content. “Povijest grada i dvorca” is a smaller display that follows the development of Virovitica from prehistory to the present. The museum has archaeological, art, cultural-historical and ethnological departments and documentation collections, and is recognisable by its slogan “mali veliki muzej” (“the small great museum”).
