About the museum

The Interpretacijski centar Čabar is one of the centres of the cultural-tourist route “Putevima Frankopana” in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. In Čabar it tells the story of how the Frankopans and Zrinski managed their estates in Gorski kotar.

The Frankopans entered the wooded areas of Gorski kotar already in the 13th century, expanding from their strongholds in Modruš in Lika and Vinodol on the Littoral. They built new settlements and developed trade and the economy. In the 16th century they were succeeded by the Zrinski, who based the economy on the exploitation of natural resources. During the 15th and 16th centuries the Ottomans occupied a large part of the Frankopan estates, and almost half of the population moved away.

The display also follows the fate of the estates after the extinction of the Ozalj branch of the Frankopans: through Katarina and Nikola Šubić Zrinski they passed to the Zrinski, to whom Gorski kotar together with the Littoral belonged until the execution of Zrinski and Frankopan in 1671.
