About the museum
The Zrinski Castle in Brod na Kupi dates from the 17th century and stands directly on the border with Slovenia. In it, the Natural History Museum Rijeka holds the permanent exhibition “Divljina s pogledom na more” (“Wilderness with a View of the Sea”) on the natural heritage of Gorski kotar.
The exhibition leads visitors from the Kupa valley and the karst underground, past the most important forest communities and the mountains above the tree line, up to the sky and the clouds. It shows the features and special characteristics of nature in Gorski kotar and elements of the traditional coexistence of people and nature. The atmospherically designed space offers a view into the world of mosses and lichens, a visit to a cold, dark abyss and an attempt to climb an artificial rock face, with hidden exhibits to discover and, at times, encounters with live birds or snakes.
On the ground floor is the interpretation centre “Putovima Frankopana, Brod na Kupi”, one of the centres of the cultural and tourist project of the same name. Its theme is the relationship of the Frankopan and Zrinski families to nature: the exploitation of ores and forests, the consequences of these interventions and knowledge of medicinal plants.
