About the museum
Muzej Cetinske krajine – Sinj (Museum of the Cetina Region – Sinj) has operated since 1956, and in 2026 it celebrated seventy years of work. It is located in the centre of the town, not far from the main square, next to the Kamičak fortress, from which there is a view over Sinj. The museum is modern, interactive and atmospheric, and presents the past, heritage and traditions of the Cetinska krajina, the area between the Svilaja, Dinara, Kamešnica and Mosor mountains through which the Cetina river flows.
The permanent display shows the interdependence of the landscape and the community that lives in it. Its thematic sections deal with the landscape, the influence of people on the area, war as a destructive social phenomenon, and the use of natural resources and the shaping of material and intangible heritage. The display presents the intangible cultural goods of the Republic of Croatia that are protected in the region: the Shrovetide procession of the mačkare from the villages below Kamešnica, traditional hand-wheel pottery in Potravlje, the art of boatbuilding in Otok near Sinj, the nijemo kolo (silent circle dance) and ojkanje (traditional singing).
The collections cover archaeology, history, art, ethnography and natural history. The archaeological collection holds finds from prehistory to the modern age, especially from the Bronze Age Cetina culture and the Illyrian Delmatae, from medieval fortresses and from the Grad fortress in Sinj. The historical collection stands out for its ceramic pipes and iron horseshoes, and the natural history collection contains fossils from the Middle Triassic and mastodon teeth found at Ruduša. The museum is a protected cultural monument.
