About the museum
The Muzej triljskog kraja (Trilj Region Museum) was founded in 1996 by the Town of Trilj, which makes it one of the youngest museums in Croatia. It is housed in a converted former parish house and has been open to the public since 2006, with support from the Town of Trilj and the Ministarstvo kulture (Ministry of Culture).
The museum holds archaeological, ethnographic, cultural-historical and numismatic collections from the Trilj area. The permanent exhibition “Tilurij – rimski vojni logor” (Tilurij – Roman Military Camp) presents the results of systematic research into the legionary camp in the village of Gardun near Trilj, which Dr Mirjana Sanader has led since 1997 with a team from the Odsjek za arheologiju Sveučilišta u Zagrebu (Department of Archaeology, University of Zagreb). More than 300 objects from the 1st century to late antiquity are on display, among them military and cavalry equipment, kitchen utensils, coins and medical instruments.
The ethnographic collection, with more than 200 objects, shows village life in the Trilj region from the 19th to the early 20th century: traditional farming, food preparation, the making of textiles and clothing, and folk costumes.
