About the museum
The Muzej betinske drvene brodogradnje (Museum of Wooden Boatbuilding in Betina) opened in the centre of Betina on the island of Murter, in the protected cultural-historical unit of the place. Betina was founded in the second half of the 15th century and is first mentioned in documents in 1478. From the beginning, the residents of Betina and Murter were farmers and herders with estates on the Kornati, at Vransko jezero (Lake Vrana) and on other islands, so boats were essential to them, and wooden boatbuilding became an important craft.
The museum is housed in a stone complex of two buildings connected by an old terrace paved with brick, as in the 19th century. The most valuable part is the old slar (balatura), a typical Dalmatian example from the Baroque period to the early 20th century. The façade with its triangular gable is typical of houses in old rural ensembles, and the building is an example of successful modern revitalisation of traditional architecture.
The holdings include 406 objects from the fields of boatbuilding, fishing, agriculture and everyday life, displayed on around 250 square metres in five rooms and a two-storey gallery. The south-eastern part shows scenes from life in which the boat is always present, and the north-western part is devoted to boatbuilding skills, with a modern boatbuilding workshop. The museum also organises workshops, visits to shipyards and educational sailing trips, which is why it is also known as the “museum outside the walls” (muzej izvan zidova).
