About the museum
The Zavičajni muzej Benkovac was founded in 1983 as part of the Narodno sveučilište (People’s University) Benkovac and has operated as an independent institution since 2007. Its founder is the City of Benkovac. The museum is housed in the Kaštel Benković, a fortified house from the 15th century that is protected as a cultural property of national significance. The kaštel was restored in 1977, when a small local collection began operating in it.
The museum holds an archaeological collection (more than 15,000 objects before the Homeland War), an ethnological, cultural-historical and Homeland War collection, and a collection of stone monuments, along with documentation, a photo archive and the museum library. Part of the collections was returned in 2010. The collections were damaged in the war, and the building was damaged too, so a project to revitalise and fit out the museum is under way.
The permanent display opened in 2022, and the castle also has a multimedia hall. The museum organises guided tours of the Kaštel Benković, the archaeological park Asseria, the site of Kličevica and the Franciscan monastery in Karin, and holds events, including klapa and ethno festivals, and workshops.
