About the museum
The Zavičajni muzej Biograd na Moru was founded in 1973 in a building erected in the late 18th and early 19th centuries on the ruins of medieval city walls, which housed a court from 1876. The museum stands on the waterfront in the centre of Biograd, the former capital of the Croatian rulers in the 11th century, and the building is a cultural monument. It collects, preserves, studies and exhibits the material and intangible heritage of Biograd and its surroundings.
The best-known collection is the cargo of a 16th-century sunken ship. The merchant ship sailed on the route between Venice and Constantinople and sank in 1583 in the Pašmanski kanal (Pašman Channel) near the islet of Gnalić. The treasure was discovered by chance in 1967 by fishermen from Murter. The museum keeps tens of thousands of objects from the ship, among them its equipment and inventory, cannons, tableware, luxury glass objects, textiles, majolica and objects for everyday use.
The museum also houses an archaeological collection from prehistory to the Middle Ages, material from the churches of Biograd and the coronation cathedral, a lapidarium, and exhibitions on Glagolitic heritage and on Biograd as a royal town. The building is currently temporarily closed, and exhibitions are held in the Gradska galerija Biograd.
