About the museum
The Posavski muzej Brežice has been housed in Brežice Castle since 1949. It grew out of the first beginnings of a museum that the Muzejsko društvo za politična okraja Brežice in Krško (Museum Society for the Political Districts of Brežice and Krško), founded on 30 September 1939, arranged in Krško. After the war the curator Franjo Stiplovšek acquired premises in the castle in 1948; in January 1949 the museum objects were moved to Brežice, and on 26 June 1949 the museum was solemnly opened. From a small town museum it developed into a regional museum for the whole of Posavje.
The two-storey Renaissance castle was built in the middle of the 16th century on the site of an older fortress that was destroyed in the peasant revolt of 1515; in the 18th century it was converted into a Baroque mansion. The Knights' Hall, the staircase hall and the chapel were painted at the beginning of the 18th century by Frančišek Karl Remb; the Knights' Hall is the largest fully painted Baroque hall in Slovenia. After the last residents moved out in 1979, most of the building was devoted to presenting heritage.
The museum presents the archaeological, ethnological, art-historical and recent historical heritage of Posavje in 24 exhibition rooms. It also manages the Vodovodni stolp Brežice (Brežice Water Tower) and Grad Pišece (Pišece Castle).
